September 30th is an important day for Canadians. It has been called Orange Shirt Day, named for the story of a young First Nation’s girl who had her newly purchased orange shirt taken from her upon her arrival at St. Joseph Mission residential school. The day is recognized as an opportunity to reflect and to educate Canadians on the experiences of First Nations peoples who had their culture, language and spirituality taken from them in the residential school system.
We praise you for your gifts that surround us.
Open our eyes to the injustices
brought against First Nation Peoples in Canada’s Residential Schools.
Give us determined hearts
to refuse to standby when the dignity of your children is denied.
Help us all to work to make our world a better place.
We make this prayer in the name of Jesus.
