WORLD YOUTH DAY AT HOME
The Diocese of Prince Albert invites young adults (15 years and up) to attend the “World Youth Day at Home” on Saturday, January 26th from 1:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish. This event will correspond with the World Youth day in Panama. The event is an opportunity to join in the spirit and prayer of World Youth day.  Activities include speakers, NET, and a live-streaming of Pope Francis at the event. There is no charge for the event and registration packages are available on the Diocese of Prince Albert website. 

SLC POPCORN & CANDY BAG SALE
The SLC will be selling bags of popcorn for $1.00 and candy bags for $1.00 all week during lunch in the Conference Room. Proceeds from the sales will go toward the “Swish for a Cure” fundraiser.

SLC HAT DAY
Staff and students are encouraged to pay $2.00 at the main office and wear a hat on Friday, January 18th. Proceeds will go toward the “Swish for a Cure” fundraiser.

JUNO 75 PILGRIMAGE FOR STUDENTS
On the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy, the Juno Beach Centre is sponsoring a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for high school students from across the country. Students will travel on a tour of Canadian battlefields of the First and Second World Wars, following in the footsteps of thousands of men and women who came before them. The Juno 75 Pilgrimage is a heavily subsidized trip. Successful applicants are asked to contribute $1000 towards the cost of the trip, with the Juno Beach Centre covering the remainder. This includes airfare to Europe from the selected participants nearest commercial airport, as well as ground transportation, accommodation, entry fees and most meals in Europe. Some meals, as well as any personal spending, are the responsibility of individual participants. Fundraising tools and support will be provided to successful applicants. Each participant of the pilgrimage is expected to complete a research project on a member of their community who was in involved in the Canadian war effort during the Second World War. This project will be presented to the group at the Juno Beach Centre during the trip. Further information will be provided to successful applicants.
    To apply, students must meet the following requirements:
§  Canadian high school student at the time of application
§  Between the age of 15 and 18 years old in July 2019
§  Will have completed at least one Canadian history class prior to the summer of 2019
§  Must be in possession of a valid Canadian passport by the spring of 2019
An application must include the following:
§  A letter of motivation (no more than 500 words) explaining why you feel you deserve to be included in this pilgrimage, and what you hope to take away from the experience
§  One (1) of: an essay (no more than 1000 words) or a video statement or a digital project or a piece of art which answers the question: “How do you personally feel connected to the experiences of Canadians during the Second World War?”
§  A resume detailing academic, volunteer, community, and/or professional accomplishments.
§  Two (2) letters of reference. One from a school official: teacher, counsellor or principal, and one from a member of the community not related to the applicant.


Complete applications, including letters of reference, must be submitted to the Google form linked on this page no later than midnight (PST) on Friday, January 25th. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. GRADE 9 SKI TRIP
The Grade 9 ski trip to Wapiti is Thursday, January 31st. Students will load the buses at 7:45 a.m. and return to the school between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Students must complete both ski trip forms and returned them to either Mr. Bexson or Mrs. Hansen as soon as you can.

ROTARY ADVENTURE IN CITIZENSHIP 2019
This annual event provides a unique opportunity for a select group of young Canadians to come together in Ottawa and gain a better understanding of our country. Through meetings with political leaders, senior officials and others, students learn about the workings of our democratic institutions. Through meeting one another and having discussions among themselves, students learn to appreciate the diversity of Canada and the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship.  Students who are interested in this opportunity are encouraged to contact a guidance councillor or any of the following teachers: Ms. Khan, Mrs. Lohneis, Mrs. Trumier or Mr. Joncas. “THE PINK BASKETBALL GAME”: SWISHING FOR A CURE
Players and coaches of the Senior Girls Basketball team share who they are dedicating their personal performance to during the Pink Basketball Game and how cancer has affected their lives.



SCHULICH LEADER SCHOLARSHIP
The Schulich Leader Scholarship is a prestigious entrance scholarship awarded to a high school graduate enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) program at partner universities. The nominated student has the opportunity to win a $100,000 or $80,000 scholarship. The criteria includes: academic excellence, leadership, and financial need.  École St. Mary High School can nominate one candidate and nomination is competitive. Please provide a list of school/community involvement, leadership activities, and a statement about financial need to Mrs.Rapin in Student Services by Monday, January 14, 2019 to be considered for nomination. STEAM HORIZON AWARDS ($25,000)

The STEAM Horizon Awards invite Canada’s youth to promote positive changes throughout their community using science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Five Canadian students will be awarded $25,000 each, to attend a Canadian university or college to study in a STEAM field. Two of these awards will be given to Indigenous students. The winners will also be invited to Ottawa and recognized at an award ceremony in April 2019. To be eligible, students must be 16-18 years old, recognized for STEAM-related accomplishments, have a minimum academic average of 85%, and be preparing to enroll in Fall 2019 in their first year of post-secondary education in a STEAM field in Canada. More information about the prize program and how to apply can be found at steamhorizonawards.ca. The deadline for applications is January 16, 2019.

“THE PINK BASKETBALL GAME”  

"The Pink Basketball Game" is an annual fundraising game to raise awareness and money to fight cancer. Our Senior Girls basketball team will be hosting the game this year on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 vs Carlton. The goal of this event is to raise funds for the purchase of CADD (computer aided drug design) pain pumps for the Victoria Hospital. One of the many ways you can help to achieve our goal is the purchase of a Swish for a Cure t-shirt. The t-shirts are available for $25 and can be purchased at the main office.   

SWISH-FOR-A-CURE QUILT RAFFLE

By purchasing a $1.00 ticket, you can support a wonderful cause and possibly win a very pink quilt at the same time.  The quilt is on display in the library. Tickets can be purchased in the library or in Rm 138 from Ms. Chan.

GRAD CLOTHING  

Grad jerseys and hoodies can be purchased at the main office. Sizers for the jerseys and hoodies are available.  

U of S RESIDENCE APPLICATIONS
Applications to live in the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Residences for Fall 2019 are now open. Students should apply to live in Residence as early as possible. Applications are considered on a first come, first served basis, regardless of a student's admission status.
First year students
Students entering their first year of studies at USask will receive guaranteed placement at Voyageur Place Residence if they apply for Residence before January 31, 2019.
How to apply for Residence 
1) Log into PAWS using your NSID and password that you receive when you apply for admission.
2) Type Residence into the PAWS search bar. The Residence PAWS channel will appear. 
3) Create a Residence account. Once your account is complete, you will be redirected to the Residence Housing Portal to compete your application.

THE TERRY FOX HUMANITARIAN AWARD

The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award ($28,000 dispersed over four years) is open to students of all abilities who are pursuing a degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution. Recipients are selected for their dedication to the humanitarian ideals of Terry Fox to improve human welfare, make a difference, and have a positive impact on community and others, their courage in overcoming obstacles (physical, financial, etc.), and definite marks of distinction and persistence in the pursuit of excellence in academic, athletic, and civic life. CANADIAN CLASSICS VIDEO COMPETITION: Grade 9 - 12
The University of Ottawa video competition aims to highlight topics from the Graeco-Roman world. Students in Grades 9-12 who are between the ages of 14 and 18 are encouraged to submit a video in English or French. Possible subjects include: ‘Why did the Persians invade Greece?’, ‘A day at the racetrack in ancient Rome’, a work of literature (a play by Euripides, a poem by Ovid) or a work of ancient art (vase, coin, statue). A prize of $500 will be offered for the best entry, with two runner-up prizes of $200. The best entries will also be posted on the website dedicated to the annual competition. IMAGINE A CANADA 2019: Student Reconciliation Project

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s (NCTR) Imagine a Canada team is calling all K-Gr. 12 students from across the country to lead our nation through reconciliation and make the future of Canada a more respectful place. Understanding residential school history can be a challenging and difficult topic; learning through art can heal, transform and empower youth to make a difference in Canadian society. Students can share their vision of what reconciliation can be in a poem, a song, a painting, a sculpture, a rap, a drawing, an essay, anything! UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

Students entering the U of S are eligible for numerous scholarships and awards. Students can see Mrs. Rapin in Student Services if they have any questions. 
1)     Guaranteed Entrance Scholarships - Students will be considered for a Guaranteed Entrance Scholarship when they apply for admissions. These scholarships recognize academic achievements and are awarded based on the calculated admission average.
2)     Competitive Entrance Awards - (Apply for admissions by Feb 15 & Apply for awards by March 1) These include numerous scholarships and bursaries that can be accessed by many students with diverse experiences. Applicants can be considered based on academic achievement, financial need and/or contributions to school and community life. All entering students are encouraged to apply. 

PADDY O’ROURKE POETRY SCHOLARSHIP ($1000)
The Paddy O’Rourke Poetry Scholarship was established in 2018 to recognize and encourage young Saskatchewan poets. It is named in honour of Patrick (Paddy) O’Rourke, a teacher, literary editor, mentor and prominent friend of Saskatoon’s and Saskatchewan’s arts community. The Paddy O’Rourke Poetry Scholarship will be awarded annually, at the discretion of the Scholarship judges and administrators. The amount awarded will be determined in part by donor support. The 2019 scholarship will be for $1,000 CDN. Applications will be accepted from April 1 to April 30, 2019.  Applications must be submitted by mail or courier. Prince Albert Curling Junior League is every Monday, during November – March, from 3:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $30 per player for the season. The regular practice time is Thursday from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All events are at the PA Golf and Curling Club.
